Fashion feature: Sally LaPointe Spring 2013

image:S.Whittle for Style WyldeDeeply thoughtful designer Sally LaPointe has made a habit out of drawing on unusual inspiration for her collections. From Kafka's Metamorphosis, to the Runwick Ruins (an abandoned small pox hospital on Roosevelt Island) LaPointe's collections are always steeped in mystery and often include an element of forlorn morbidity.

For the Spring 2013 collection, LaPointe's mystery ran even deeper, with liner notes that read merely:

"A secret hidden submarine base in Russia, unknown to the outside world. Carved into a mountain side, massive man-made concrete structures combine with the depth and fluidity of the sea. Nature and man, electricity and contrast between these two opposite forces."

Is this underground lair a place of myth, or a creation of LaPointe's own ample imagination? We aren't to know. But we do know the clothing this place inspired was nothing short of beautiful.

Blending fluid fabrics like silk charmeuse and satin with more structural friendly materials like leather and crisp crepe, has always been LaPointe's strong suit and here she did it best in a palette of cream neutrals spiked with burnt orange and black accents.

Sleek and modern, but still with a touch of frailty that brought a light and feminine element to the collection, the pieces were both highly original and ultimately easily pictured being worn by a wide variety of women.
