Erickson Beamon Fall 2011: Operatic Odyssey

Stepping out of the elevator at Milk Studios an excited murmur could be heard moving across the 8th floor gallery space: Ballerinas! On ladders! Wearing bejeweled face masks!

Although many of murmurers had gone to Milk to view one of the three other collections showing on Sunday, February 13th as part of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, everyone seemed to be buzzing about what exactly was going on in "that space with the ballerinas."

Whittle for Style WyldeWhat was going on was the Erickson Beamon Fall 2011 presentation, featuring dancers from the Russian American Foundation's Bolshoi Ballet Academy wearing the designer's intricate jeweled pieces atop ladders while practicing ballet accompanied by  Jeff Palmer from the Metropolitan Opera and violinist Tim Fain, in what was a fantastically splashy, almost Aronofsky-esque fashion show that delighted the art-savvy crowd in attendance.

But with 20+ years in the industry designing one-of-a-kind pieces for Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Anna Sui and Unargo, Karen Eckerson and Vicki Beamon know wearable is not necessarily the most important factor when presenting an accessories line during Fashion Week.

Usually delegated to augmenting apparel collections, accessories are not often thought of as a headlining event, but headlining is exactly what Erickson Beamon ended up doing with their unusual collection, and over-the-top presentation.
