Updated: Mercedes Benz Spring 2011 Fashion Week overview
The venue has changed, but the fact remains Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is the most important style event of the season, with hundreds of designers, editors, and photographers descending on Manhattan to celebrate all that is American fashion.
So what surprises will this Fashion Week bring? Well beyond the fact that "The Tents" have been replaced by the Theater, the Studio and the Box, there is no way to predict the hits and misses with complete accuracy but, based on what we saw last season our day-by-day breakdown of ones-to-watch is as follows:
Thursday, September 9
Nicholas K, Project Runway, Toni Maticevski, Richard Chai, Ruffian, Christian Siriano, Bensoni,Farah Angsana,VERRIER, Concept Korea, Richie Rich, Daniel Vosovic, Silvio Liu
Two to watch: Daniel Vosovic and Nicolas K
Following up his deliciously dreamy Fall 2010 collection will be no easy task for the Project Runway alum. But with a sharp eye for shapes and a deft hand for construction we are positive Daniel Vosovic can pull it off.
Debuting at Lincoln Center this season, the brother and sister design team behind Nicolas K have been wowing in-the-know editors and bloggers with preview shots of there clean, modern, military collections for men and women. Called by one influential blogger "menswear that I'd actually wear" the Nicolas K team is destined to make a big splash at Lincoln Center.
Friday, September 10
Guli Collections, Tadashi Shoji, BCBG MAX AZRIA, Duckie Brown, Michael Angel Buckler, EDITION Georges Chakra, Ports 1961, Alexander Berardi,Nicole Miller Fashion's Night Out, Academy of Art University
One to watch: Sweaters so soft and luxurious looking we could almost feel their cashmere goodness around our shoulders from high in the "blogger"seats highlighted the Ports 1961 Fall collection, and this season we can not wait to see what this innovative sportswear company has to offer.
Saturday, September 11
Lacoste, Binetti, Cynthia Rowley,Jill Stuart, Prabal Gurung, ADAM, Yoana Baraschi, Vivienne Tam, Mik Cire, Charlotte Ronson, Z Spoke by Zac Posen, Venexiana
One to watch: Although rising star Prabal Gurung, is sure to send trend-setting looks down the catwalk, we'd be lying if we didn't admit that Z Spoke by Zac Posen isn't on our 'pay attention' list.
Sunday, September 12
Derek Lam,Timo Weiland, ELise Overland Lela Rose, Malandrino, DKNY, Rebecca Taylor, Rebecca Minkoff, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, Diane von Furstenberg,Trias Y-3 ,Global Glam Collection, Custo Barcelona,Tommy Hilfiger,Vassilios Kostetsos
Twoto watch:Timo Weiland and Elise Overland
Stepping off the ancient elevator at the Chelsea warehouse where Timo Weiland staged his Fall 2010 presentation, we found ourselves breathless. Swimming through a sea of black-clad guests while Siouxsie and the Banshees blared we waded our way towards the models impeccably styled with a Rosemary's Baby vibe. This theatrical presentation not only left us hoping local boutiques would pick up the line, but also left us dying to see what this young label would have in store for the crowd this season.
Last season, a intimate but star-studded crowd which included Heidi Klum, Peaches Geldof and Kelly Osbourne delighted in the beautifully tailored with a strong dash of rock and roll collection sent down the runway by Elise Overland. This season we can't wait to see what the Scandinavian designer who has dressed everyone from Steven Tyler to Taylor Momsen has in store for Spring.
Monday, September 13
William Tempest, Jenny Packham, Carolina Herrera,Carlos Miele, Diesel Black Gold,Tracy Reese, Donna Karan Collection, TONY COHEN, Monique Lhuillier, Yeohlee, Rad by Rad Hourani Hourani, Alexandre Herchcovitch,Betsey Johnson,Leifsdottir, Perry Ellis
Two to watch: Diesel Black Gold, Rad by Rad Hourani.
It's true that Diesel Black Gold got off to a rocky start last season with a series of delays that had many New York gossip tongues wagging, but the over-all energy, creativity and MTV party vibe of the show ( not to mention being seated near the delicious Miss J) had us glad we braved the elements for the well edited denim-centered collection. This season we are confident snow won't be a problem, and Diesel will deliver again.
For Jordan born, Paris trained and current Canadian resident Rad Hourani, years of globe trotting as a model, stylist and visual artist were the impetus to creating a bold, modern, unisex collection for his affordably priced Rad by Rad Hourani label that is as wearable as it is artful. We can't wait to see what this relative newcomer who is oft compared to mega-houses like Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh has to offer.
Tuesday September 14
Elie Tahari, Monique Péan,Badgley Mischka,Vera Wang, Rosa Cha,Bibhu Mohapatra, Max Azria, Dennis Basso, Luca Luca, Sophie Theallet, Tibi, Narciso Rodriguez,Toni Francesc,
One to watch: From the opening images of Toni Francesc's multi-media fashion extravaganza Artificial life last season, we knew we were about to see something special. What followed was a gorgeous display of futuristic pieces that struck a perfect balance between art and style. We can't wait to see what the Spanish style maker dreams up for Spring.
Wednesday September 15
Bill Blass, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore, General Idea, Adrienne Vittadini, Gottex, Milly by Michelle Smith,Eva Minge, Odd Molly, Anna Sui, Mackage, Zang Toi
Two to watch: In recent seasons it's been hard to argue with Anna Sui as a major fashion force to be reckoned with but we also loved Tory Burch's turn towards the art world for her Fall 2010 collection.
Thursday September 16
Ralph Lauren, Andy & Debb, Isaac Mizrahi, Davidelfin, Argentina Group Show, Calvin Klein Collection Women's, J. Mendel, Rebecca Moses, Naeem Khan, L.A.M.B., IVANA helsinki
Two to watch: For the very last day, we are going mainstream with L.A.M.B. and avant garde with Davidelfin.
Hyper saturated pigments in yellows and pinks offset a bold graphic black and white pallet in the Davidelfin Fall collection. See a full slide show of Davidelfin here.
Season after season Gwen Steffani proves she has the design chops to support her rock and roll esthetic. We loved the fresh, young yet luxe pieces in her Fall 2010 collection and can't wait to see what she sends down the runway for L.A.M.B. Spring 2011.
